Seaford Pensioners Without Gas Supply for Over a Week

Gas supply cut for repairs

An elderly couple in Seaford have been left without heating or hot water for over a week after their gas supply was disconnected. Lindsay Freeman, 76, and Nick Freeman, 75, live at Holm Cottage in Maurice Road. Their supply was turned off by SGN last Wednesday for street repairs.

"It's just so cold all the time," Mrs Freeman said. "SGN turned the gas off last Wednesday for repairs in the street, and it's not been turned back on since. We've still got no gas. We've got no heating and no hot water. It's a nightmare."

Impact on daily life

Mrs Freeman said she relies on hot baths to help with back pain. "I suffer with my back and rely on hot baths to relieve the pain, but I can't have a bath or even have a shower," she explained.

With no heating in the bedrooms, Mrs Freeman said she has been going downstairs each morning to use the fan heater in the lounge. She also cannot wash properly and has to boil a kettle for basic washing up.

The situation is particularly difficult for the couple as Mrs Freeman is disabled and her husband has cancer. "I'm disabled and my husband has cancer. We're getting desperate," she said.

Repeated contact with gas company

Mrs Freeman said the couple have contacted SGN multiple times by phone. According to Mrs Freeman, they have been told that SGN is unable to isolate the hub from the supply but has made it safe.

SGN declined to comment on the individual case. A spokesman said: "While it is not possible to comment on any individual cases due to customer confidentiality, we always endeavour to make contact with any customer left without gas supply."

The spokesman added that SGN provides alternative heating and cooking facilities where required and gives customers timescales for reconnection. "Safety is always our number one priority," the spokesman said.
