The Cure Founder Lol Tolhurst Plays Headline Show at Quarters
Lol Tolhurst, drummer and founding member of The Cure, performed a headline gig at Quarters on Brighton seafront on 28 October.
The Cure co-founder returns to Brighton
Lol Tolhurst, who founded The Cure alongside Robert Smith and played on the band's releases from 1978 to 1989, performed a headline show at Quarters on the Brighton seafront on 28 October. Tolhurst, who is also an acclaimed author and a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, left the band in 1989 and relocated to California, later reuniting with The Cure in 2011.
The performance
The gig featured Tolhurst on drums, joined by his son Gray Tolhurst on guitar and vocals, and Oliver Cherer on bass. The set lasted 53 minutes and opened with 'The Holy Hour' from The Cure's 1981 album 'Faith'. The band performed a mix of classic Cure material, including 'A Forest', 'Siamese Twins', 'A Strange Day', 'M' and 'The Hanging Garden', drawing from albums including 'Seventeen Seconds', 'Pornography' and 'Faith'.
Tolhurst addressed the crowd during the performance, noting that it had been a long time since he had been in Brighton and that The Cure had frequently visited the city when they were teenagers.
Tour dates
The Brighton headline show was one of seven dates announced by Tolhurst a few months prior. Five of these supported the Chameleons in Glasgow, Leeds, Bristol, London and Southampton, whilst Tolhurst also appeared at Tomorrow's Ghosts Festival Halloween Gathering in Whitby.
Venue notes
According to the review of the performance, drinks prices at Quarters were notably high, with two small tins of beer charged at over £12. The reviewer also noted a discussion with security staff regarding the positioning of crowd barriers at the venue.
