Brighton Racecourse Ranked Second Most Haunted in UK
Brighton Racecourse has been named the second most haunted racecourse in the UK, with 147 paranormal reports recorded for the town.
Ranking reveals paranormal activity at the track
Brighton Racecourse has been named the second most haunted racecourse in the UK, according to a new ranking by AskGamblers. The study examined 60 racing tracks across the country to determine which locations had the strongest links to paranormal activity.
The Paranormal Database lists 147 reports for Brighton, which is more than any other racecourse town in the country. This contributed to Brighton achieving a haunted score of 8.13 out of 10, placing it just behind Chester Racecourse, which scored 8.27.
Local context and historical significance
Brighton is the highest-ranked racecourse in Sussex, performing significantly ahead of three other local venues: Plumpton, Goodwood and Fontwell Park. The track is located just 0.07 miles from the City Cemetery. Racing has been held on the current site since 1783.
How the ranking was calculated
AskGamblers assessed the racecourses using three main factors: the distance from the track to the nearest cemetery or churchyard, how long racing has been recorded there, and the number of paranormal reports listed for the town. Courses with documented ghost or curse stories of their own earned a bonus point. The haunted score was then calculated as the average of the three factors plus any bonus, capped at 10.
The broader study found that proximity to burial grounds is common among UK racecourses. Of the 60 racing tracks examined, 42 are within half a mile of a cemetery or churchyard, and 56 are within a mile.
