Community Groups Have Weeks Left to Bid for Montreal Arms Pub
The Montreal Arms in Albion Hill has triggered a six-week window for community bids under its Asset of Community Value protection.
Deadline approaching for expressions of interest
Community organisations have until 3 November to signal their interest in purchasing the Montreal Arms on Albion Hill, following the pub's return to the market.
The building holds Asset of Community Value status, which triggers a statutory six-week window. During this period, the council must receive notification from any groups wishing to be considered as potential bidders before private sale proceedings can continue.
Brighton and Hove City Council deputy leader Tim Rowkins confirmed the deadline on social media. "ACV status means that, before any private sale can proceed, there has to be an opportunity for the community to raise funds and make an offer," Cllr Rowkins said.
How the process works
Registering an initial expression of interest does not commit a group to purchasing the property. It simply notifies the council that an organisation wishes to be considered a potential bidder.
If one or more community groups register before the cut-off date, a six-month moratorium is triggered. This gives campaigners time to raise funds and submit a formal offer. The property owner may continue marketing the building during this period but cannot complete a sale with a private buyer.
Should no community bids be registered by 3 November, the owner will be free to proceed with an open-market sale without further delay.
History of the Montreal Arms
The pub closed in 2020. Brighton and Hove City Council designated it as an asset of community value in November 2023 following an application by the Friends of the Montreal Arms.
The building has been at the centre of controversy in recent years. In March 2022, distinctive green tiles were removed from the exterior. Site owner Charlie Southall subsequently faced enforcement action. In July 2026, Lewes Crown Court ordered the council to pay Mr Southall £11,475.60 after prosecutors dropped criminal proceedings over an alleged breach.
Next steps
Community groups interested in registering an expression of interest have been urged to contact Cllr Rowkins directly to connect with council legal officers.
