Lewes named among UK's friendliest retirement towns
The historic East Sussex market town has been recognised for its community spirit, heritage and outdoor spaces.
Recognition for community and heritage
Lewes has been named one of the friendliest places to retire in the UK, according to travel website World Atlas. The historic market town was selected for a list of eight UK retirement destinations chosen for their peaceful and welcoming communities.
World Atlas recognised Lewes for "a combination of heritage, outdoor recreation, and an active community." The publication highlighted the town's cobblestone streets, independent shops and local markets, as well as the River Ouse running through the centre.
Amenities and attractions
Several specific facilities contributed to Lewes's selection. Pells Pool, described as the oldest freshwater pool in the UK, and Pell's Lake, which is open for fishing, were noted as important amenities. The town's football club and The Dripping Pan field offer community sporting opportunities.
Lewes's annual Bonfire Night celebration, which commemorates the 1605 Gunpowder Plot and the Seventeen Protestant Martyrs of Lewes, was highlighted as a unique tradition that brings residents together. The ongoing markets and Lewes Golf Course were also cited as features contributing to the town's friendly atmosphere.
What the town offers
The town provides a range of activities for residents and visitors. Historic sites include Lewes Castle, built shortly after 1066 and offering panoramic views over the medieval town, and Anne of Cleves' House, which shows Tudor and Elizabethan domestic life. Lewes Priory contains the remains of an 11th-century monastery, while Grange Gardens is now a public space featuring a peace garden and fountain.
For those interested in local history, The Bull House was once home to Thomas Paine, the political philosopher who played a key role in the American Revolution.
The town is also home to independent shops, antiques and boutiques, a working brewery and historic pubs. For families, Drusillas Park zoo is located less than 10 miles away, and Eastbourne seafront is 15 miles distant.
This recognition follows Lewes being recently named one of the most hospitable places in England by the same publication, with the town praised for its strong sense of community and lively social calendar.
