Ayari's Goal Gives Brighton Victory Over Manchester City
Brighton and Hove Albion secured a 1-0 win at Manchester City on Saturday, with Yasin Ayari scoring the only goal of the match.
Ayari Makes Amends
Yasin Ayari scored the goal that secured Brighton and Hove Albion's 1-0 win over Manchester City on Saturday afternoon. The striker found the net after just 11 minutes, providing redemption following his missed penalty in Wednesday's League Cup shoot-out at the same ground.
Head coach Fabian Hürzeler got the revenge he sought, with Brighton collecting all three points despite City being Premier League leaders. The Seagulls opted to remain in the north west after their midweek cup fixture, a decision that proved worthwhile.
How the Goal Came About
Lewis Dunk released Diego Gomez down the right with a free-kick pass. Gomez's low cross found its way through City's defence after Matheus Nunes failed to cut it out. The ball rebounded off Maxim De Cuyper's ankles before presenting Ayari with a simple finish from close range.
City's Response
Manchester City responded with vigour, particularly through Iliman Ndiaye, who went close on several occasions. Ndiaye should have levelled when picked out by Elliot Anderson but headed wide, leaving Bart Verbruggen untested. He tested the Brighton keeper again after a weaving run and had another chance late on when he drove a low cross into the box that appeared to strike Lewis Dunk's hand, though nothing was given.
Ndiaye squandered further opportunities, slamming into the side-netting and going close again as City stepped up the tempo in the second half. Verbruggen made several important saves, including one that sent a powerful Ndiaye effort onto the post.
Late Pressure
Brighton created a chance early in the second half when De Cuyper blazed over. City maintained pressure throughout the closing stages, with Nico O'Reilly and Rayan Cherki both going close for the hosts, but Brighton held firm.
The result marks a second consecutive Premier League defeat for Manchester City following seven straight wins at the start of the season. Brighton, now just two points off the top, bounced back from their loss to Liverpool last weekend.
