Transvision Vamp Return to Brighton After 37 Years
The band played their first Brighton show since 1989 at Chalk on 28 October, with support from Merseyside trio Yee Loi.
First Brighton show in decades
Transvision Vamp returned to Brighton for the first time since 1989 when they played Chalk on 28 October as part of their UK and Ireland tour. The band previously performed at the Top Rank Suite (now PRYZM) on 19 October 1988 and 12 June 1989, but had not played Brighton since.
Frontwoman Wendy James and bassist Dave Parsons are the only remaining original members. They were joined by guitarist Alex Ward from Thurston Moore's band, drummer Jim Sclavunos from Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, guitarist Pip Stakem and keyboard player Matt Millership.
Band origins in the city
According to the review, the band originally started in Brighton, based in Sillwood Terrace just south of Western Road. James's voice remained in strong condition, delivering performances of tracks including opening number "Trash City" and their cover of Holly and the Italians' "Tell That Girl To Shut Up".
The setlist also featured material from James's solo career, including "Speedball" from her 2011 album "I Came Here To Blow Minds" and "You're A Dirtbomb, Lester", inspired by music journalist Lester Bangs.
Support act impresses
Merseyside trio Yee Loi opened the show to strong reception. The three-piece comprises siblings Rose on guitar and occasional lead vocals, Matilda on drums and lead vocals, and Don Don on bass. Their material drew from rock influences including the Ramones and Motorhead, with covers of Elvis's "Mystery Train" and The MC5's "Ramblin' Rose" alongside original songs such as "Dad's Money" and "Down In The Bunker".
Yee Loi's debut album "Flicks, Licks, Party Tricks" is set for release on 15 January on red vinyl and CD.
Chalk was reported to be close to full capacity for the reunion show, which was date 12 of 16 on the current tour.
