Hastings Council Announces £1.2 Million Fairness Fund for Community Groups
Hastings Borough Council has launched a new £1.2 million funding programme to support community-led projects in areas of greatest need.
New funding to support grassroots organisations
Hastings Borough Council has unveiled The Fairness Fund, a £1.2 million initiative aimed at backing community-led projects across the area. The scheme will focus on improving opportunities, health and wellbeing in areas of greatest need.
Councillor Glenn Haffenden, leader of Hastings Borough Council, said: "The Fairness Fund is about investing in the people, places and communities that make Hastings special. We know that the best ideas often come from local people who understand the challenges and opportunities in their communities. Through this £1.2 million programme, we want to support those grassroots organisations and community groups that are making a real difference and help them create even greater impact."
Applications will open later this year, with funding available from spring 2027. The fund will support grassroots organisations and community groups that have insight into local challenges and can develop workable solutions.
Children's University Academy to launch
One major project already set to benefit from the fund is the creation of a Children's University Academy for Hastings. The academy will work with children aged five to 14, offering them opportunities to explore new interests, develop confidence and gain recognition for achievements outside the classroom.
Neil Miller, deputy CEO at London South East Academies Trust (LSEAT), said: "Children's University is an exceptional programme that helps all children discover new interests, develop confidence and believe in what they can achieve. Through a wide range of learning experiences beyond the classroom, it creates a sense of belonging, builds aspiration and helps young people recognise their own potential."
The programme will be delivered in partnership with LSEAT and East Sussex County Council. A dedicated Children's University co-ordinator will work with primary schools, community organisations and local employers to build a network of opportunities across Hastings.
Sustainability, environmental awareness and future skills will be key themes, with children encouraged to explore career options and develop skills for the future economy. The official launch of the Hastings Children's University Programme will take place on Thursday, 28 January at East Sussex College.
Broader community benefits
The Fairness Fund will also support projects that improve educational opportunities, strengthen community health and develop long-term social value in high-need neighbourhoods.
