Emergency response to falling glass
Firefighters were called to Upper Bedford Street in Kemp Town in the early hours of 25 October following reports of an unsafe structure. A large pane of glass had fallen from a building, and there were concerns it might fall onto the nearby junction of St Georges Terrace.
East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service arrived at the scene at 2.16am. According to the rescue service, "A large pane of glass had fallen from a building and there were concerns that it might fall on the junction of St Georges Terrace."
Firefighters used an aerial ladder platform appliance to make the scene safe. The service left the area at 2.55am once the incident had been dealt with. Sussex Police were also informed of the incident.
Storm aftermath raises safety questions
The incident occurred as Brighton and Hove continues to deal with the aftermath of Storm Austen and Storm Boelo. Storm Austen caused widespread disruption across Sussex, including toppled trees, power cuts and damage to Brighton's historic West Pier.
Storm Boelo subsequently brought further disruption, with gusts reaching 80mph and causing travel chaos across the country. The Met Office had warned that flying debris could cause injuries or threaten lives, whilst buildings, power supplies and travel could be affected.
Fallen trees, debris and the severe weather disrupted rail services across the county over the weekend.
