Long-standing Asian grocer closes at Brighton Open Market
Century 18 Grocery has ceased trading at Brighton's Open Market after more than a decade in business, with owners citing a heartbreaking decision.
Closure ends era at city centre market
Century 18 Grocery has closed at Brighton's Open Market after more than ten years of trading. The Asian grocer announced its closure on social media on 8 October 2026, saying it had been a privilege to serve the community.
In a statement posted on Facebook and Instagram, a spokesman said: "With a heavy heart, 18 Grocery officially ceased trading at Brighton Open Market on 8 October 2026. We are truly grateful for all your support over the years. You have never been just customers to us; many of you have become dear friends."
The business opened at the market in 2014 and specialised in a range of Asian food products, including snacks, vegetarian items, dim sum, homemade appetisers, desserts and drinks available for eating in or taking away.
Customer tributes pour in
Regular customers expressed their sadness at the news online. One regular said: "Getting delicious hot dim sum from you on my lunch break has been the highlight of my day for years, thank you so much for your wonderful service over the years and always putting a smile on my face."
The closure marks another change in the trading landscape at Brighton's Open Market, which dates back to the 1880s and underwent a revival in the early 2010s. The site is owned by a community interest company.
Last year, traders expressed concerns about difficulties they were facing at the market, with some saying their businesses were being "brought to its knees" due to changes in how it operates.
Century 18 Grocery's owners thanked customers for their friendship and support, saying: "Although 18 Grocery's journey at Brighton Open Market has come to an end, we will always cherish the friendships and memories we have made. You were never just our customers. You were our friends."
The Open Market has been approached for comment about the closure.
