Brighton kitten Luna finds her forever home after rescue from abuse
Four-month-old Luna, rescued from a Brighton property after suffering serious injuries, has found love and companionship with her new family and their Labrador.
From trauma to tail wags
A heartwarming story of rescue and recovery is unfolding in Brighton, where a severely injured kitten has found solace and love in an unexpected friendship. Four-month-old Luna was rescued from a property in Brighton in July 2024 after a concerned neighbour alerted authorities to her welfare and reported the suspicious death of another cat at the address.
RSPCA inspector Charlotte Baumann was called to the scene by police and immediately transported Luna to a veterinary clinic. Vets discovered Luna had suffered a suspected fractured skull, a fractured tail, and other injuries entirely consistent with physical abuse. With nearly three decades of experience in animal welfare, Inspector Baumann described the case as among the worst she had encountered throughout her 29-year career with the RSPCA.
A second chance at life
Following her night at the veterinary surgery, Luna was placed into foster care through the RSPCA Brighton and Sussex Branch. Jenny Eden, the branch manager, explained the importance of moving Luna quickly into a supportive environment: "We knew Luna had been through a lot of distress and we were keen to get her into foster care as soon as possible to help her adapt to normal life. She was a confident cat so we thought she would thrive."
Mrs Eden's instincts proved correct. Luna was placed with Abbie Williams and her husband George, who were already experienced foster carers for the RSPCA. This was Luna's fosterers' fourth rescue cat, but something special happened when Luna met the family's Labrador, Flash.
Best friends forever
"When we introduced her to Flash and the meeting went so well, we decided to keep her," Abbie Williams, 28, explained. The connection between the kitten and the Labrador was immediate and genuine. "They are just best friends. They love snuggling up together and have just started playing together in the garden," she added.
The transformation in Luna's life represents not only a personal victory for one kitten, but also highlights broader concerns about animal welfare in the community. A man was subsequently prosecuted for two animal welfare offences relating to the incident.
Luna's story is being shared by the RSPCA as part of their Cruelty Hurts, Love Rescues campaign, which shines a light on rising levels of animal abuse across the country.
