Almost 70,000 Adur and Worthing homes eligible for £100 energy payment
Nearly 70,000 properties across Adur and Worthing could receive £100 towards household energy costs under a new government scheme starting in January 2027.
Who is eligible
Almost 70,000 properties across Adur and Worthing could benefit from a new £100 household energy payment scheme. The money is intended to help eligible households in council tax bands A to D with their energy costs over winter.
According to government figures from 31 March 2026, Adur had 26,070 properties in these bands, while Worthing had 43,100. Together, this represents around 85 per cent of all properties across the two council areas.
The scheme will include most households exempt from council tax, although full eligibility criteria have yet to be published. Second homes, empty properties and households where the occupant is not responsible for paying council tax are not eligible.
How to receive the payment
Payments are due to begin in January 2027. Households that pay their council tax by direct debit will receive the £100 directly into their bank account. Those who do not pay by direct debit will be invited to apply through their local councils.
Additional support
The government has also announced an additional £100 million for local authorities to provide support to those who are not entitled to the £100 payment but still need help with their energy costs.
Local impact
If every eligible property in Adur and Worthing received the payment, it would represent a theoretical value of £6.9 million locally. However, the actual number of eligible households and the eventual cost of the scheme have yet to be established. These figures are based on properties recorded in each council tax band as of 31 March 2026, rather than confirmed eligible households.
Properties in council tax bands A to D account for about 89 per cent of all properties in Adur and about 83 per cent in Worthing.
