West African Musicians Habib Koité and Sura Susso Come to Shoreham
Malian guitarist Habib Koité and Gambian kora player Sura Susso will perform their new show Manding Melody at Ropetackle Arts on 30 October.
New show coming to Ropetackle Arts
Two of West Africa's most celebrated musicians are performing in Shoreham this month. Guitarist Habib Koité from Mali and Gambian kora player Sura Susso will present their new show, Manding Melody, at Ropetackle Arts on 30 October.
The performance will showcase music from Susso's latest album, Londi, released on 9 October. The word 'Londi' means 'knowledge' in Mandinka. The show combines the sounds of kora, balafon, percussion, bass and vocals, blending traditional and modern Manding music.
Honouring the griot tradition
The album pays tribute to the griot tradition. Griots, known as 'djeli' in Mandinka culture, are storytellers, historians and musicians who pass on knowledge and wisdom through performance rather than books. Both Koité and Susso come from this lineage.
Londi mixes traditional stories with contemporary arrangements, demonstrating the artists' respect for tradition whilst bringing Manding culture into the present day.
Cross-generational project
The Manding Melody tour is a cross-generational project that unites musicians from Senegal, Mali and The Gambia, offering a rich blend of Manding traditions and contemporary influences.
Tickets for the performance are available through Eventbrite.
