Pevensey Bay Restaurant Closes Days Before Planned Rebrand
Massilia Bay has announced its closure just nine days after revealing plans to relaunch as La Mora Wine Bar and Restaurant.
Seafront venue closes unexpectedly
Massilia Bay, located on Sea Road in Pevensey Bay, has confirmed its closure just days after announcing an ambitious rebrand. The restaurant had been due to relaunch as La Mora Wine Bar and Restaurant on 4 November, following an announcement on 16 October.
In a statement posted on Facebook, a spokesman said: "It is with regret that we announce the closure of Massilia Bay. Unfortunately, despite our hopes and plans, we have been unable to move forward with the launch of La Mora."
Plans for new concept abandoned
The planned rebrand promised significant changes to the restaurant's offering. La Mora was to feature seasonal tasting menus and more refined dining, with a greater emphasis on wine and hospitality. The restaurant had also planned to open a wine bar where customers could order a glass of wine, cocktail or food without booking a full dining experience.
The new name drew inspiration from the Mora, the flagship vessel used by William the Conqueror when crossing the Channel before landing at Pevensey in 1066. The restaurant intended the name as a tribute to the sea, Pevensey Bay's history and "the spirit of setting out on a new journey".
Plans included themed dinners and other events, with pizzas to remain on the menu alongside the upmarket offerings.
Final service announced just days before closure
Only nine days before confirming the closure, Massilia Bay had promoted a final tasting evening under its original name, describing it as an opportunity to "say farewell to the old restaurant and look ahead to a new beginning".
Prior to closure, Massilia Bay operated as a relaxed coastal restaurant serving pizza, pasta and drinks, alongside fresh fish and ingredients sourced from East Sussex suppliers.
The restaurant's statement thanked supporters and visitors, saying: "We would like to sincerely thank everyone who has supported us, visited us and been part of our journey." No further reason for the closure has been provided beyond the restaurant's statement that it had been unable to proceed with the launch.
