Brighton Marina to introduce parking charges at multistorey car park
Free parking at Brighton Marina's multistorey car park is ending, with ticket machines now installed and charges set to begin.
End of free parking at the marina
Brighton Marina is introducing paid parking at its multistorey car park, marking the end of free parking that has been available for many years. Ticket machines have recently been installed, and the marina has now confirmed the scheme will go ahead.
The marina said the charging system is being introduced to "improve safety, security, and help fund ongoing maintenance". A spokesperson confirmed that "once introduced, the tariffs will make Brighton Marina the most competitively priced car park in the city".
However, no launch date has yet been set. The marina said it will "confirm the start date and full details ahead of launch".
Who will still park free
Berth holders and eligible site employees will continue to park for free under the new arrangement. The marina is also negotiating with David Lloyd gym, which operates on site, to secure free car park access for its members.
The Asda supermarket car park, which is managed separately by the retailer, will continue to offer free parking for up to two hours.
Reaction from visitors
Comments on the news indicate concern among regular visitors. Several people said free parking was the main reason they visited the marina, and suggested they would go elsewhere once charges begin. Some expressed particular worry about the impact on the marina's businesses, which have already faced closures in recent years.
One commenter noted that residents of Brighton Marina itself may be affected, as some households have multiple cars and have traditionally used the multistorey car park, particularly at weekends.
