The Brighton CineCity festival kicks off this week with a programme of world cinema and a dedicated screening of locally made short films.
Festival highlights local talent
Brighton CineCity returns this week with its 24th programme of world cinema, festival previews, and archive films. Alongside the international offering, the festival is dedicating a screening to locally produced work, celebrating filmmakers from across Brighton and Hove.
The local shorts showcase takes place on Wednesday 11 November at Fabrica, 40 Duke Street. The evening features ten films covering diverse subjects and filmmaking styles.
What's showing
The programme includes Dead to Door, a 12-minute comedy from director Kate Lloyd about a ghost-hire service worker, and Driver Change, a five-minute piece by Joshua Firsht capturing two bus drivers' worst shift changeover. The Easy Way Out, a 14-minute film from Ben Bovington-Key, explores a reunion between two brothers and themes of loss and connection.
Green Grass, made by Aram Atkinson, follows an undergraduate working alongside his Deaf classmate in the Sussex seagrass meadows. Landscape Walking, a 10-minute work from directors Matt Page and Dave Stephens, documents artist Dave Stephens' journey across the Sussex countryside as he grapples with memory loss.
Ruby Phelan's The Last Pancake uses magical realism to tell the story of a woman rediscovering herself at a local cafe. Georgia Apsion's Love You, Bye is a 13-minute film that takes a playful approach to the subject of death. Ian Helliwell's Melting Sea presents decayed 8mm footage from the 1970s, with technical faults incorporated into the final work.
Joel Byron's Stilt. Nail. Type. is a black and white film exploring movement and materiality through three artists' processes. Completing the programme is We Are Persons, a six-minute collaboration between filmmaker Andrew Kötting and his daughter Eden, examining themes of identity and humanity.
Practical details
The local shorts screening runs on 11 November at 6.00 pm and carries a 15 certificate. Tickets start from £5.50 and are available through the CineCity website. The festival continues across multiple venues throughout Brighton and Hove until 15 November.
