Brighton did not need the flat white boom to arrive — it already had a serious independent coffee scene, and it has only got more competitive since. Ranking "best coffee" properly means looking past the star rating alone to how many people actually left one — a 5.0 from five reviews is a very different thing to a 4.6 from nearly 600. Here's the honest breakdown, correct at time of writing.
Black Mocha, North Laine — the highest rated with real weight behind it
103 Gloucester Road, North Laine. Rated 4.6/5 on Google (578 reviews) and 4.6/5 on TripAdvisor (183 reviews) at time of writing. This is the one with both a strong score and the review volume to back it up — nearly 600 people on Google alone landing on the same number is not a fluke.
"I had a V60 which was super and relatively cheap," wrote one reviewer, while another rated the food just as highly as the coffee: "The breakfast is next level incredible. Fresh, tasty, well priced." Our pick for best all-rounder.
Ease Coffee, North Laine — the new favourite (still building its reputation)
27 Gloucester Road, North Laine. A perfect 5.0/5 on Google, but from a smaller base of 104 reviews — and 5.0/5 on TripAdvisor from just 5 reviews, so genuinely new and still building a track record. We're being upfront about that, because a five-star average means something different at 5 reviews versus 500. That said, everyone who has left a review clearly loves the place: "Run by a warm and friendly Italian couple who really care about giving a good experience," said one, and the baking gets a special mention too — "One of the best brownies I've ever tasted!" One to watch.
Bond St Coffee, North Laine
15 Bond Street, North Laine. Rated 4.5/5 on Google (545 reviews) at time of writing — worth noting that TripAdvisor separately shows a different figure, 4.1/5 from 115 reviews, so we're citing the Google number specifically rather than implying it's universal. Reviewers rate the sourcing as much as the drink itself: "The coffee is brought in as beans from places like Kenya, Ethiopia, Colombia, Venezuela," noted one, with another simply adding, "Staff were so nice."
Trading Post Coffee Roasters, The Lanes — the most-reviewed of the lot
36 Ship Street, The Lanes. Rated 4.3/5 on Google but the most-reviewed venue in this whole round-up by a distance — 1,373 reviews — plus 4.0/5 on TripAdvisor (366 reviews) at time of writing. When that many people have an opinion and it still lands comfortably positive, that's a genuine achievement. "The food is great quality and drinks are fab... I particularly loved the iced Bakewell latte," said one reviewer, while another kept it refreshingly simple: "it was bloody lovely coffee."
The verdict
Black Mocha is our pick — the rare combination of a high rating and a genuinely large sample size across two platforms. Ease Coffee might well overtake everyone eventually, but give it time to build the numbers. Bond St and Trading Post both deserve a visit — just know which rating you're trusting on which platform.
