A trip to the Brighton seafront without fish and chips is basically a wasted trip. But "fish and chips" covers everything from the genuinely brilliant to the genuinely reheated, so we went looking for the ones locals and visitors actually rate — real reviews, real numbers, correct at time of writing.
Bardsley's, Baker Street — four generations deep
22-23 Baker Street. Rated 4.4/5 on TripAdvisor (453 reviews, #113 of 1,011 Brighton restaurants at time of writing). Bardsley's has been family-run since 1926 — that's four generations of the same family frying fish, verified via their own site (bardsleys-fishandchips.co.uk), and it shows in both the reviews and the queue out the door.
"The quality of the fish was super and the batter was incredibly thin and crisp," said one reviewer, while another didn't hold back: "the fish was exceptional... cooked to absolute perfection!" A century of practice will do that.
Little Jack Fullers, Kemptown
102 St James's Street, Kemptown. Rated 4.3/5 on TripAdvisor (96 reviews) and 4.6 on Google at time of writing. Reviewers rate the fish, but they really rate the sides: "The fish was so tasty and well cooked... the mushy peas were really unusually good too." Unusually good mushy peas is not a compliment you hear every day — take it seriously.
Sea Breeze, Hanover
28 Southover Street, Hanover. Rated 4.3/5 on TripAdvisor (a small sample of 27 reviews, worth noting honestly) and 4.6 on Google at time of writing. Small sample size aside, the praise is emphatic: "By far the best fish and chips shop I tried," said one reviewer. Worth a detour if you're in Hanover already.
Bankers, Western Road/Norfolk Square
116a Western Road, Norfolk Square. Rated around 4.0/5 on TripAdvisor and 4.3 on Google at time of writing. Bankers has built a bit of a reputation for one specific thing that keeps coming up across reviews: free chip refills. Several reviewers mention it independently, which suggests it isn't a one-off — turn up hungry and stay hungry-adjacent.

The verdict
Bardsley's edges it on both longevity and volume of praise — four generations of practice tends to tell. But Little Jack Fullers and Sea Breeze are both genuinely excellent, smaller alternatives, and Bankers' free refills policy has earned it a loyal following of its own.
