A large downland suburb east of the city, self-contained and family-oriented, with wide views and the world's deepest hand-dug well. BN2.
Woodingdean is a large residential suburb on the high downland to the east of Brighton, often described as one of the biggest villages in the country. Developed mostly from the 1920s onwards on open farmland, it sits exposed on the ridge between the city and the sea at Rottingdean, with wide views across the Downs.
The community is centred on its own parade of shops, schools and the Downs Hotel, and is well known for the surrounding countryside, the Nuffield and Brighton racecourse edges, and the nearby Woodingdean water well, the deepest hand-dug well in the world. Largely self-contained and family-oriented, it is a quiet, settled place a short bus ride from both the city centre and the coast.
