A preserved estate village, manor and the city's largest park on the Downs beside the University of Sussex, within the National Park. BN1.
Stanmer is the great country estate on the north-eastern edge of the city, a preserved eighteenth-century village, manor house and park set in a fold of the Downs beside the University of Sussex. Stanmer Park is the largest park in Brighton & Hove, a sweep of open parkland, woodland and downland that forms part of the South Downs National Park and is a favourite escape for walkers, cyclists and families.
At its heart, Stanmer Village is one of the best-preserved estate villages in Sussex, with flint cottages, a parish church and a pond, all protected as a conservation area. The restored walled garden, the Earthship ecological building and the cafes around the village draw visitors year round, while the surrounding Downs offer some of the finest walking close to any English city.
