A coastal garden suburb at the eastern edge of the city, famous for its restored art deco lido and its cliff-top seafront. BN2.
Saltdean is a coastal residential suburb at the eastern edge of the city, straddling the boundary with Lewes district, best known for the magnificent Saltdean Lido. This 1938 Grade II* listed art deco open-air pool, restored and reopened by a community-led campaign, is one of the finest surviving lidos in the country and the heart of local life.
The area was laid out as a seaside garden suburb in the 1930s, and its curving avenues of white houses climb the valley back from the cliffs. The seafront, reached below the coast road, links along the Undercliff Walk to Rottingdean and Brighton Marina, and the Downs rise immediately behind. Saltdean offers a quieter, more affordable coastal life a short drive or bus ride from the centre.
