London Road

The regenerating shopping corridor north of the centre, with the Open Market, Preston Circus, the Duke of York's cinema and The Level. BN1.

London Road is the main artery running north from the centre towards Preston Park, and the name covers the lively, regenerating district around it including Preston Circus and the open green of The Level. Long the city's more affordable shopping street, it has seen real revival in recent years, anchored by the restored Open Market and a growing mix of independent traders.

Preston Circus is home to the Duke of York's Picturehouse, the oldest continually operating cinema in Britain, with its distinctive can-can legs on the roof. The Level, a large public park between London Road and Richmond Place, has a skate park, water play and a cafe, and hosts events through the year. The area is well connected by bus and by London Road station, and is increasingly popular with students and younger residents.
