Right then, we've properly tipped into autumn now, haven't we? That lovely September light is doing wonders for the seafront, and honestly, it's the perfect time to get out and about without melting. This week's been full of heartwarming stories — from young Luna the rescue kitten finally settling into her forever home, to those adorable baby animals at Drusillas posing in their tiny school jumpers. It's the kind of week that reminds you why we love this place.

This Week in Brighton & Hove

- A rescue kitten's happy ending: Luna, a four-month-old kitten rescued from a Brighton property after serious injuries, has found love with a new family and their Labrador. It's proper feel-good stuff — if you've got a soft spot for animals (and let's face it, who hasn't?), it's a lovely reminder that our community looks after its vulnerable friends.

- Second Hand September is back: Oxfam's annual campaign returns for its seventh year, and it's the perfect excuse to rummage through pre-loved fashion and do something kind for the planet at the same time. Ideal for finding vintage treasures without the fast-fashion guilt.

- Families take note — a big activity park's coming nearby: Oxygen Activeplay, a £2 million indoor facility with 40 trampolines, slides, interactive games, and a toddler zone, is opening at Crawley Leisure Park next month. Not on our doorstep, but worth marking your calendar for rainy days with the kids.

- Halisco's still on top: Preston Street's beloved Mexican restaurant has kept its crown as Brighton's best restaurant for the second year running in Time Out's rankings. If you haven't been yet, that's your sign.

This Weekend

With the weather still playing ball, Saturday and Sunday are perfect for proper seaside time. Head down to Brighton Beach — it's free, it's always there, and early September means fewer crowds than summer but still plenty of sunshine. The pebbles are lovely for a stroll, and you can grab coffee or something stronger at one of the seafront spots.

If you fancy something a bit different, the North Laine is brilliant for a mooch around — independent shops, vintage finds, and Komedia if you fancy catching some live entertainment. Saturday's market is always worth a wander.

Over in Hove Lawns, it's peaceful and green, perfect for sitting out with a book or a coffee while the autumn light does its thing. And if the kids (or the kid in you) need entertaining, the Brighton Palace Pier is free to walk on — rides cost extra, but there's plenty to see without spending a penny.

Where to Eat and Drink This Week

This week we're spotlighting Hove — Church Road and George Street have some cracking options. The Gingerman is brilliant for modern British comfort food done properly. If you're after something with more atmosphere and a great wine list, Cin Cin is your spot. And if you want proper fresh seafood with a side of history (it's been going since 1945), English's of Brighton over in The Lanes is worth the short trip — though it's legendary enough that booking ahead is wise.

Oxfam's Second Hand September: Pop into your local Oxfam shop this week and embrace pre-loved fashion. It's September's best excuse to find something brilliant and sustainable.

Autumn's arriving: Layers are your friend now — mornings can be fresh, but afternoons warm up nicely. Perfect exploring weather, really.
