Rooftop sauna and bar approved for Tower Point office block
Brighton and Hove City Council has approved plans for a rooftop sauna, bar, and amenity space at the 1960s Tower Point building on North Road.
A new rooftop retreat for Brighton
Brighton and Hove City Council has given the green light to an exciting new addition to the North Laine area. PLATF9RM, a co-working space occupying floors five to eight of the Tower Point office block at 44 North Road, has secured approval for a rooftop sauna and bar with stunning views across the city.
The co-working company, which describes itself as a "third place" for businesses and creatives to connect and collaborate, is transforming underused rooftop space into a vibrant community amenity. The facility will sit alongside PLATF9RM's existing site at Hove Town Hall, expanding its offering across the city.
What's being built
The approved plans include a single-storey, flat-roofed sauna cabin at the southern end of the terrace, complete with reception, changing rooms, and showers. An outdoor bar will serve the wider terrace area, surrounded by planting and a glazed screen to provide shelter whilst preserving views. A storage building and enhanced landscaping complete the scheme.
Planning officers noted that the external alterations are "minor in nature" and will not negatively impact nearby listed buildings or the character of the North Laine Conservation Area.
Opening times and access
The rooftop bar will operate from midday to 11pm Monday to Saturday, and until 10.30pm on Sundays, weather permitting. The sauna will be available from 8am to 8pm Sunday to Thursday, extending until 10pm on Fridays and Saturdays.
Whilst the facilities are primarily for PLATF9RM members and their guests, pre-booked access will be available for local residents, ensuring the community can enjoy this new addition. External groups and organisations will also be able to hire the terrace when it's not in use by the co-working space.
Local jobs and investment
The development is expected to create two full-time jobs, with three additional staff members working weekends. This jobs boost comes as part of the broader revitalisation of Tower Point, the distinctive early 1960s office block that overlooks North Road.
The project represents the kind of creative transformation that's helping to breathe new life into Brighton's built heritage, turning a classic mid-century building into a vibrant hub for work, wellness, and community gathering. With panoramic views across Brighton and Hove, the rooftop space promises to become a beloved destination when the weather cooperates.
