Exciting progress continues on Brighton's new city centre Premier Inn as planning officials have approved the hotel's external signage scheme.

Brighton and Hove City Council has granted advertisement consent for the striking branding that will grace the new 187-bedroom hotel currently rising on West Street. The approval permits parent company Whitbread to install an internally illuminated fascia sign, two illuminated projecting signs, and a non-illuminated directional board across the complex.

Council Backs Contemporary Design

Council planning officers have concluded that the proposed branding is proportionate and will not harm visual amenity or public safety in the Old Town Conservation Area. In their decision report, officers noted that the signage would be mounted on a contemporary commercial building within a town centre location already characterised by a variety of advertisements, shopfronts, and commercial signage.

"The signage would appear as an appropriate feature within the street scene and would not result in visual clutter or appear unduly prominent," the officers wrote in their assessment.

To protect the surrounding area, illumination has been carefully restricted to cool white LEDs on the lettering, logo, and the chain's distinctive moon and stars motif, preventing any glare or disturbance to neighbours and pedestrians.

Supporting the Community

A separate directional sign has also been signed off, designed to assist visitors and delivery drivers in locating the main West Street entrance. This practical addition recognises the hotel's prominent location and the need to manage foot and vehicle traffic efficiently through the city centre.

Project Nears Completion

Whitbread submitted the advertisement proposals in July as structural work on the hotel neared completion. The project reached a significant milestone in late August when project leaders and contractors gathered on the roof for a traditional topping out ceremony, celebrating the completion of the concrete frame's highest point.

This £35 million regeneration project is reviving a prominent central plot that sat empty for years following the demolition of the former Paradox nightclub and surrounding 1960s buildings. The development was subsequently expanded when developers absorbed the neighbouring site at 12 South Street, which increased capacity to 187 rooms and enabled the relocation of the main entrance to West Street.

The approval of the signage scheme represents another positive step towards the hotel's opening, bringing further investment and employment opportunities to Brighton's thriving city centre. The project demonstrates the ongoing transformation of the area and the continued confidence in the city as a destination for business and tourism.
