Beloved Crawley aquatic centre embarks on exciting new chapter under fresh ownership

A treasured local landmark finds new stewards
One of Sussex's most beloved aquatic centres is embarking on an exciting new chapter. World of Water in Crawley, based in Turners Hill, has been acquired by Benjamin Tate, executive director of Tates of Sussex. The centre will reopen as Watermeadow Aquatic & Plant Centre on August 12, marking the beginning of a fresh era for this cherished local business.
Over three decades of dedicated service
The site has served aquatic enthusiasts and water gardeners since 1989, when it first opened its doors as a specialist aquatic supplies centre. It was developed by Annette and John Yeomans into one of the leading centres in the South East, earning a fantastic reputation for quality and expertise. The centre features mature show gardens, indoor aquarium displays and extensive pond facilities that have made it a destination for visitors across the region.
A smooth transition with continuity at its heart
Annette Yeomans, who has built the business with dedication over many years, is now ready to retire and hand over the reins to Tates of Sussex. She expressed her confidence in the new ownership, saying she is "delighted they will take it forward, continue caring for all of the livestock, and also look after my family – my wonderful staff."
Benjamin Tate has emphasised the importance of preserving what makes World of Water so special. "Annette has done an amazing job building the business, and we are incredibly grateful to have been given the opportunity to take the reins," he said. "World of Water has earned a fantastic reputation over many years, and we're committed to preserving everything that makes it so special."
In reassuring news for staff members and regular customers, all employees will remain with the business under the new ownership.
Plans for growth and investment
While honouring the centre's heritage, Tates of Sussex has outlined exciting plans for the future. Benjamin Tate confirmed that as Watermeadow Aquatic & Plant Centre, they will continue to be a destination for aquatic enthusiasts while investing in the site's future. The team plans to introduce complementary planting and gardening ranges that will enhance the customer experience whilst remaining true to the business's established identity.

"As a Sussex family business, we're passionate about investing in our local communities. The centre will close for one day on August 11 to support the smooth transition to its new name and ownership.
