If you've ever thought about how you'd like to see Brighton and Hove develop, now's your chance to have a real say. The city council has opened a major consultation that will directly shape planning decisions for the next 15 years.
The scoping consultation runs from 14 July to 7 September and invites residents to share their views on some of the most important questions facing our community. What matters to you? Whether it's potential housing sites, supporting economic growth, protecting green spaces or improving biodiversity, your input will help guide these crucial decisions.
What the City Plan covers
The City Plan is one of the most important documents the council produces. It guides decisions about new homes, development, transport and infrastructure, helping determine what can be built and where. It also shapes how we protect our green spaces, natural environment, heritage and the special character that makes Brighton and Hove so distinctive.
Deputy leader of Brighton and Hove City Council, Jacob Taylor, emphasised the significance of the consultation: "The City Plan is one of the most important documents the council produces. It guides decisions about new homes, development, transport and infrastructure and helps decide what can be built and where it can go. It also shapes how we protect our green spaces and natural environment, as well as our heritage and the things that make our city so special."
Building on previous feedback
This isn't starting from scratch. Earlier consultation work began in November 2024 and received over 700 responses, including 200 from young people through a dedicated youth survey. That valuable feedback has already shaped the initial priorities for the plan. Since then, a revised national planning policy framework has updated the context for preparing the plan.
How to get involved
Getting involved is straightforward. Full details of the consultation and access to all documents are available online at the council's Your Voice portal: yourvoice.brighton-hove.gov.uk/en-GB/folders/city-plan-scoping.
Prefer to look at physical copies? No problem. You can view them at Hove Town Hall and all city libraries during normal opening hours.
Looking ahead
The city plan will cover the entire area within the current administrative boundaries of Brighton and Hove, excluding the South Downs National Park. This approach aligns with government guidance on local planning.
Mr Taylor urged everyone to get involved: "I would urge residents, businesses and community groups to take this opportunity to share their views with us and help us plan for a thriving, sustainable, safe and inclusive city we can all be proud of."
With major decisions about housing, transport, green spaces and development on the horizon, this consultation is a real opportunity to shape the Brighton and Hove we'll all be living in for years to come.
