Brighton's beloved city centre pub reopens as O'Neill's after major transformation

A much-loved Brighton city centre pub has thrown open its doors once again, but with a fresh new identity. What was previously known as The Font, located on the corner of Union Street and Meeting House Lane, is now welcoming guests as O'Neill's following an extensive rebrand and renovation project.

The venue, which closed in July for the transformation, is part of the O'Neill's chain run by Mitchels and Butlers. The company submitted plans for the rebrand in February, with the aim of bringing the historic pub into line with the chain's contemporary style and offering.

A historic building gets a modern makeover

The Grade II listed building has a fascinating history. Originally constructed in 1688 as a chapel, it was rebuilt and enlarged twice – in 1810 and 1825 – by renowned local architects Amon Wilds and Charles Busby. It has not been used as a place of worship since 1988, making this new chapter as a vibrant pub a fitting next phase in its long story.

The reimagined venue now boasts a capacity of 400 people and features a contemporary design throughout, including a new bar, multiple TV screens, and a dedicated dance floor.

General manager Chris Stewart said: "A cornerstone of Brighton and the city's number one sports destination, we're delighted to give the pub a brand-new look. We may have a makeover, but we're still the same beloved pub you've always known. One of the great things about is we're able to offer guests looking for a great live music experience, while still providing an excellent place to dine out during weekdays or somewhere to enjoy the big match."

Entertainment and dining offerings

O'Neill's is positioning itself as a destination for both sports fans and music lovers. Live music events will take place every Friday and Saturday from 9pm until 3am, with a traditional band performing every Sunday from 8pm. The venue will also host an open mic night every Monday and karaoke every Thursday from 9pm, followed by a live DJ until 3am.

The food menu includes a "mega Irish breakfast" and a hot honey chicken and bacon burger. Weekday diners between midday and 6pm can enjoy a meal with a soft drink for £8.95, making it an affordable option for lunch or early dinner. A bottomless brunch is available from 12 to 5pm on weekdays and 12 to 4pm at weekends.

Guests can watch TNT and Sky Sports channels throughout the pub, and happy hour runs Monday to Friday from 4pm to 8pm. Takeaway options are also available.
